Lactoperoxidase, a major component of milk basic protein,
attenuates in vitro osteoclast differentiation

Snow Brand Milk Products Co., Ltd. (head office: Shinjuku, Tokyo, president: Tadaaki Kohnose) considers the research and development of leading-edge milk technologies a top priority issue and strives to improve the taste and functionality of milk and dairy products. In this research project, we broadly examined the health-related functionality of milk constituents and made it clear that MBP® increases bone density.

This time, during joint research with the Nara Institute of Science and Technology, we discovered that lactoperoxidase, a protein contained in MBP®, inhibits osteoclast ^*1 differentiation ^*2.

This research result will be presented at the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research 31st Annual Meeting, which will start on September 11th in Denver, Colorado, USA.

*1 Osteoclast: Cells that physiologically destroy old bone tissue. An excessive increase in osteoclasts decreases bone density.

*2 Differentiation: The change of a cell into a different cell that has a characteristic shape or function

Summary	:	MBP® is a protein fraction contained in milk. Snow Brand Milk Products Co., Ltd. has discovered and reported that MBP® promotes bone metabolism. This time, we searched for an MBP® component that inhibits osteoclast differentiation. As a result, we found that lactoperoxidase, a protein contained in MBP®, performs this activity. Lactoperoxidase inhibits both the induction of transcription factors necessary to osteoclastogenesis and activation of the signaling pathways in cells that is triggered by osteoclast differentiation factor. This result once again shows that MBP® improves bone health.
